  • An only child whose father was a dyer's laborer, he performed in musical revues put on by a Methodist church and did his national service in the RAF. After leaving the RAF, he trained for the theatre with Esme Church at the Northern Theatre School between 1951 and 1952. He supplemented his acting by teaching drama and selling encyclopedias. He became an expert swordsman to such an extent that he arranges fights for stage, film and television and is a founder member of the British Fight Arrangers. He was the first actor to be given a special citation as a performer by American TV Radio Commercials Festival (1969). He first played Alf Roberts in Coronation Street in 1961. Married to Norma, he had three sons and three daughters: Jonathan, Bernard and Leonard and Jacqueline, Simone and Helen.

While there, he learned the art of fencing and later taught in schools around Leeds, West Yorkshire, England, as well as directing fights on stage in Perth, Scotland, and at the Theatre Royal, in York, North Yorkshire, England. He also coached actors Robert Hardy and Tom Courtenay. Mosley later became a founder member of the Society of British Fight Directors.
  • His character in the British television soap opera Coronation Street (1960), Alf Roberts, was Mayor of the series' fictional setting, Weatherfield and in a 1995 storyline, Alf was appointed OBE by the Queen for his public service. It is often stated incorrectly by many sources that Mosley himself was appointed OBE. He never was.
