Anthony had acquired considerable theatrical experience before he won a scholarship to the Rose Bruford College of Speech and Drama. He made his first professional appearance as an actor at the Civic Theatre, Wellington. He lived in Italy for two years and played two seasons of plays in English with the Rome Theatre Group, during which time he acquired a working knowledge of the Italian language, an asset he utilised throughout his career. Returning home, he played in Rep for two years at a number of theatres, including Birmingham, Canterbury and Coventry. Television included 1,000 episodes of Crissroads in which he played Carlos the Chef. He played a season at the Old Vic, appearing in The Merchant of Venice, Peer Gynt, Othello and Measure for Measure Other theatre roles included A Doll's House, Waiting For Godot, amongst the classics, plus such as The Matchmaker, Pygmalion, and The Man Who Came ti Dinner. The odd panto included Babes in the Wood and Dick Whittington, as well as national tours of The Caretaker and Born Yesterday. In London, he appeared in A Bed Full of Foreigners and A Touch of Spring. The odd film included Performance, Yanks, Oh What a Lovely War and The Last Days of Pompeii.
