[covering the 1970 Cannes Film Festival for a magazine]: What is the point of being a critic at Cannes? I don't honestly know. The good films will be seen in London, anyway; the bad sink without trace. Hours of sitting without a cigarette, possibly dressed for a first night at Covent Garden, starved of food, alcohol or even a Happy Kup, watching a piece of Hungarian symbolism with inadequate French subtitles, is bad, I find, for the judgment.
