Biography

Gloria Monte is known as an American Television producer and director working primarily in the field of television daytime drama. Gloria Montemuro was born in Allenhurst, New Jersey on August 12, 1921. Gloria attended the University of Iowa, New York University, Columbia University where she earned her Masters Degree in drama. In 1952, she married writer and director Robert O'Byrne (m.1952-1991) with whom she founded a New York theater group, ABBÉ Theatre School. With O'Byrne, Gloria Monte directed summer stock productions; led acting and speech workshops at the New School in New York City, where her pupils included the following: Marlon Brando, Demmi Moore and Tony Curtis.

Took over as Executive Producer of the low rated General Hospital (1963) in 1978 and turned it into an international phenomenon. She changed the face of daytime television with her adventurous story lines, and was responsible for the highest ratings in daytime history - Luke and Laura's Wedding. She served as executive producer from 1978 to 1986.

Was the model for the motherly soap opera producer in the film _Tootsie (1982)_.

Retired and living in Rancho Mirage, California.
