- Consecutively shot seven sequel films, almost all for separate franchises: Star Trek Into Darkness (2013), The Amazing Spider-Man 2 (2014), Star Wars: Episode VII - The Force Awakens (2015), Zoolander 2 (2016), The Cloverfield Paradox (2018), Pacific Rim: Uprising (2018) and Star Wars: Episode IX - The Rise of Skywalker (2019).
- With the exception of Domino (2005), which was filmed primarily in the Super 35 format, all of his features were filmed in the Panavision anamorphic format. In recent years, he has always tried to convince new directors who interview him to shoot this way, as well as on 35mm film. Zoolander 2 (2016), Pacific Rim: Uprising (2018) and Red One (2024) were filmed with Arri Alexa digital cameras.
- Member of the American Society of Cinematographers (ASC) since 2008, and the British Society of Cinematographers (BSC) since 2010.
- Father of Lily Mindel.
- As of 2021, he is one of four South African born cinematographers to be awarded the ASC: the others are David Millin, Vincent G Cox and Stephen Goldblatt.
