Biography

Shinji Mikami is an acclaimed Japanese video game director, producer, and designer widely celebrated as the "godfather of survival horror." With a career spanning over three decades, he fundamentally shaped the gaming industry by establishing the core rules, mechanics, and atmospheric tension that define the modern interactive horror genre.

He rose to global prominence during his prolific tenure at Capcom, where he directed the groundbreaking 1996 hit Resident Evil. The game became a massive commercial and critical success, coining the very term "survival horror" and launching one of the most lucrative multimedia franchises in entertainment history. Later, Mikami revolutionized the industry a second time by directing Resident Evil 4 (2005). Its innovative over-the-shoulder camera perspective and intense pacing permanently altered the design of third-person action games.

Beyond the Resident Evil franchise, Mikami directed several other cult classic titles, including the dinosaur-themed thriller Dino Crisis, the stylized beat-'em-up God Hand, and the high-speed sci-fi shooter Vanquish. Known for drawing heavy cinematic inspiration from gritty, visceral Western films, his work consistently blends intense psychological dread with action-driven resource management.

In 2010, Mikami founded his own Tokyo-based development studio, Tango Gameworks. Under this banner, he returned to his dark roots to direct the psychological horror game The Evil Within (2014) and later served as executive producer on its acclaimed sequel, The Evil Within 2 (2017). After overseeing the launch of the studio's colorful action-rhythm title Hi-Fi Rush (2023), he departed the company to launch independent new ventures, cementing his enduring legacy as a premier visionary in interactive entertainment.

Famously stated that he would "cut [his own] head off" if his game Resident Evil 4 (2005), which he had developed exclusively for the Nintendo GameCube, would end up on other platforms ("cutting one's head off" means "quitting one's job" in Japanese slang). When his company Capcom indeed decided to port the game to the PlayStation 2, he apologized to the game's fans, and later quit Capcom to start his own company, Clover Studio.
