Biography

David Michán is a Mexican-Canadian film and television director working across psychological thrillers and character-driven genre storytelling.

With over 20 years of experience, he has directed for NBCUniversal/Telemundo on prime-time series including Señora Acero, El Señor de los Cielos, and El Chema, operating within fast-paced broadcast environments and collaborating closely with producers and network teams.

He trained at the Centro de Capacitación Cinematográfica (CCC) in Mexico, one of the most selective film schools in the world, admitting only a small number of filmmakers each year.

His feature debut, Adverse Effects (2011), screened at over 30 international film festivals and received multiple awards. The film was described as "a stunning feature debut" by critics, establishing his distinct visual style rooted in psychological tension and character-driven narrative.

After relocating to Canada, Michán expanded into visual effects, contributing to productions including Yellowjackets, further refining his approach to tone, atmosphere, and cinematic world-building.

He most recently directed the independent feature The Girl Inside the Photograph (2025), a psychological horror film exploring trauma, identity, and perception, which premiered at Dances With Films: New York and received coverage from genre outlets including Film Threat.

His feature screenplay Eat Me has been recognized by major international genre markets and programs, including Sitges International Fantastic Film Festival, Fantastic Fest, and The Black List.

Michán’s work explores the instability of identity and the fragility of perception, often placing characters in environments where reality begins to fracture and internal conflict manifests externally. His directing approach blends grounded performance with controlled visual intensity, balancing psychological realism with genre-driven storytelling.
