- Pietro Metastasio was born on January 3, 1698 in Rome, Papal State [now Lazio, Italy]. - Educated by Gian Vincenzo Gravina, a jurist who adopted him and prepared him to study law. Gravina led Pietro to change his name from 'Trapassi' to 'Metastasio', the hellenized equivalent, in 1715.
