- Misha Mengelberg was born on June 5, 1935 in Kyiv, Ukrainian Soviet Socialist Republic, Soviet Union [now Kyiv, Ukraine]. He was a composer, known for Robinson Crusoe mercante di York (1985), De vijanden (1968) and Van Oekel's discohoek (1974). He was married to Amy. - Fearing Joseph Stalin, Misha's Roman Catholic family emigrated from the Soviet Union to Holland when he was three.

- He was a jazz pianist, composer and arranger who was inspired by Duke Ellington, Thelonious Monk and Herbie Nichols. He was a founder of the Instant Composers' Pool (ICP), a collective comprising many of the Netherlands' most inventive jazz avant-garde musicians. He also co-founded the Amsterdam research and development center STEIM (Studio for Electro Instrumental Music).
