Costume designer Anthony Mendleson was born in London, England, in 1915. In the 1930s he studied art in France and Italy. He began his career as a painter and set designer for the stage but joined Ealing Studios as a costume designer and wardrobe supervisor in 1947 and stayed with the studio until its demise in 1959. He designed the costumes for such Ealing classics as Kind Hearts and Coronets (1949), The Lavender Hill Mob (1951) and The Ladykillers (1955).

After Ealing closed he worked at Pinewood Studios on many different films, including Macbeth (1971), Young Winston (1972) (for which he received an Oscar nomination) and Alice's Adventures in Wonderland (1972) (for which he won a BAFTA award). He was also nominated for an Oscar for The Incredible Sarah (1976).

He died in October of 1996.
