Miss America 1973

The night she was crowned Miss America, she wore a bracelet engraved with the name of an American P.O.W. in Vietnam. She vowed she would never take it off until that soldier was accounted for. She was true to her word: the soldier was later eventually rescued.

Has released one recording, "Eyes of My Heart". She has also authored four books.

Had a stint with The New Christy Minstrels.

Was heavily favored to win the year she competed and won the Miss America title.

Began her television work at WTMJ-TV in Milwaukee in 1978. She left the station in 1986 to raise her family.

Has 7 children with her 2nd husband Andy Friedrich: Drew Friedrich (b.1983), Tory Friedrich (b.1985), J.P. Friedrich (b.1987), Tyler Friedrich (b.1989) and three more daughters. Most of them are adopted from difficult backgrounds. The youngest three girls were adopted from the Ukraine.
