- Miss America 1973
- The night she was crowned Miss America, she wore a bracelet engraved with the name of an American P.O.W. in Vietnam. She vowed she would never take it off until that soldier was accounted for. She was true to her word: the soldier was later eventually rescued.

- Has 7 children with her 2nd husband Andy Friedrich: Drew Friedrich (b.1983), Tory Friedrich (b.1985), J.P. Friedrich (b.1987), Tyler Friedrich (b.1989) and three more daughters. Most of them are adopted from difficult backgrounds. The youngest three girls were adopted from the Ukraine.
