Mini bio

  • Born in Hamilton, Mark acted in school plays, such as Macbeth and Julius Caesar. On finishing school, he followed his father working in the pits, but soon became restless and disillusioned with Britain. He wanted to travel, saved the money from his job as a timber porter and went to Australia where he joined a small theatrical touring company doing potted versions of Shakespearean classics. He also did four films there, including Mick Jagger's 'Ned Kelly'. When he was broke, he spent some time as a boxer, resulting in getting his nose broken. After having it reshaped, he returned to Britain where he did road repair work and worked as a bookie. He started to get small acting jobs in such series as Sam, The Borrowers, Strangers and Bullman. His first appearance in Taggert was in 1983 in an episode called 'Killer' in 1983. His interests included fishing, gardening and breeding butterflies.

Quotes

  • I had no great talent as an actor, but I learned the techniques and applied myself.
  • My own health problems began when I worked on the docks in Australia. You would take your shirt off first thing in the morning because of the heat. Nobody knew anything about sun cancer in those days, and it was only about eight years ago that the medical people became aware of it. It would have been picked up earlier if Marion had been at home instead of in hospital. The first time that I noticed it, and became aware of the problem, was when I saw my shirt was covered in blood. People who work outside will always be at risk.
