In the mid-nineties McLaughlin joined Mike Paseornek in launching Canadian production company, Cinepix, in the US. Within three years they grew the company into what is now Lionsgate Films. While there Lauren produced American Psycho, Buffalo '66, and several others. She's had three screenplays produced: Hypercube (the sequel to the cult hit, Cube), Prisoner of Love (starring Naomi Campbell and Eric Thal), and Specimen (starring Mark Paul Gosselaar). She also wrote the award-winning web series, Maatkara and Chi-Chian for sci-fi.com. During a hiatus from the film industry she wrote five novels and three children's books, which were published by Random House, Soho Press and others in over a dozen countries. Since returning to the film industry in 2020, she has written and directed three award-winning short films. When she's not writing and directing, she works as a Script Supervisor for such directors as Matthew Vaughn, Juan-Carlos Fresnadillo, Clio Barnard, and others.
