Biography

Gary McLarty was born on January 16, 1941 as Gary Raymond McLarty. In his youth Gary lived at the McKinley Home for Boys in Los Angeles. He was there during the filming of East of Eden (1955) starring James Dean. He worked as an extra. He is known for his work on The Blues Brothers (1980), Beverly Hills Cop (1984), and Jurassic Park (1993). The tragedy plagued Twilight Zone: The Movie (1983) found Gary in the helicopter that fired the blank shots which resulted in three fatalities when things went wrong on the ground. In 2001 Gary testified in court that he turned down Robert Blake's offer to kill Blake's wife, Bonnie Lee Bakley. He died on October 11, 2014 when a pickup truck driven by fellow stuntman Bob Orrison making a U-turn was broadsided by a Jeep Cherokee in Rancho Cordova, California, USA. Both stuntmen were killed instantly. The two persons in the Jeep Cherokee were hospitalized with non-life threatening injuries.

Gary was stunt coordinator and second unit director On National Lampoon's Animal House (1978). He is known for his work as stunt coordinator on The Blues Brothers (1980), Twilight Zone The Movie (1983), Beverly Hills Cop (1984) and Days Of Thunder (1990). He is also known for his work on The Terminator (1984), Falling Down (1993), Jurassic Park (1993), And Lethal Weapon 4 (1998)

He was in the helicopter, as a stunt coordinator, that crashed during filming of Twilight Zone: The Movie (1983), killing Vic Morrow, My-ca Dinh Le, and Renee Chen, on July 23, 1982.

Gary McLarty was called upon to testify at the murder trial for Robert Blake. Blake had been accused of approaching McLarty with an offer of $10,000 to murder his wife in 2001. He told the court that Blake suggested he "pop" his wife while she slept. McLarty testified that he turned Blake down. He said that Blake then approached another stuntman. Blake was thought by most to be the actual murderer, but was acquitted in a 2005 criminal trial. In a 2008 civil trial Blake was ordered to pay the victim's family $30 million. That was reduced initially to $15 million by the appeals court, and reportedly was ultimately settled out of court in 2013 for $2 million.

His son Cole McLarty is also a stuntman.
