First lady of the United States (1897-1901)

Entombed next to her husband at the McKinley Memorial Mausoleum in Canton, Ohio

She spent most of her husband's political life confined, sitting in a rocking chair crocheting and doing other things to work with her hands. Her husband would often leave important business when she called to tend to her needs.

The public never knew of her frail health. The facts of her condition were not made public until almost a half century after her death.

During her second pregnancy in 1871, she was diagnosed with phlebitis and was prone to seizures. This left her an invalid for the rest of her life.
