The author of Clint: The Life and Legend, a biography of actor/director Clint Eastwood. Although touted as "scrupulously researched," McGilligan did not attempt to verify any of Sondra Locke or Gordon Anderson's age claims. Consequently, much of the book's chronology is fraught with error, and many statements concerning Locke are drawn from a false premise.

He is also editor and chief interviewer for the five "Backstory" books, in which famous screenwriters from the silent days through to the 1990s discuss their work.

His biography of Fritz Lang devotes a lot of space to the unsubstantiated rumor that Lang murdered his first wife. However, McGilligan eventually admits at the end of the relevant chapter that, during extensive research he undertook in Germany, he could find no evidence that this woman had actually existed, much less that Lang had married her or that she had been killed.
