Appeared in several Broadway revues in the 1940s, as well as Irving Berlin's musical "Miss Liberty" (1949), as Eddie Albert's girlfriend. She made something of a comeback to Broadway in the 1970s, appearing in Stephen Sondheim's "Follies," in which she played Stella, who sang and led the company in the dance to "Who's That Woman?", and "Chicago" (1975), in which she played jail matron "Mama" Morton.

Trivia
Appeared as a child in Shirley Temple, Jane Withers and Virginia Weidler film vehicles during the late 1930s and early 1940s. At age 14, McCarty performed as a torch singer at the Hollywood Tropics, a night spot.
