Biography

Tom McCarthy began his career in the film industry at MGM Studios where he held various positions as a picture apprentice, picture assistant, Foley walker, sound editor and sound supervisor.

From MGM, McCarthy went on to open his own businesses, Effective Sound Unlimited and The Sound Choice. At these companies, he functioned as the owner, operator and sound supervisor for sound editorial until 1991 when McCarthy was asked by Sony Pictures Studios to run their sound editorial department, while continuing his creative talents as a supervising sound editor/designer.

It was during this time that McCarthy was working on Francis Ford Coppola's Bram Stoker's Dracula (1992) , which garnered him an Academy Award® in the Sound Editing Category. He has also received a British Academy Award (BAFTA) for best sound on Out of Africa (1985). His other sound editing credits include titles such as: Tootsie (1982), Jagged Edge (1985), Ghostbusters (1984) & Ghostbusters II (1989), Lost in Yonkers (1993), Beethoven (1992), Arachnophobia (1990), *batteries not included (1987), Twins (1988), White Nights (1985), Kindergarten Cop (1990) and The Karate Kid Part II (1986).

During his term at Sony Pictures Studios, McCarthy has been responsible for the hiring of sound crews and overseeing the creation of sound tracks on over hundreds of titles.

McCarthy is a member of the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences and a past member of the Executive Sound Branch Board. He is holding a position on the board of the MPSE (Motion Picture Sound Editors) and is a member of the Cinema Audio Society.
