He was the one of the original screenwriters of the Saturday morning television series, Pee-wee's Playhouse (1986). McGrath co-wrote the theme song with DEVO frontman, Mark Mothersbaugh. He additionally performed some of its puppets including "Globey" and his live action role of an outer space alien named Zyzzybalubah. He was nominated two Emmy Awards for his professional work to that series. His additional Emmy nomination was Tracey Ullman's Home Box Office series, "Tracey Takes On".
