- Mikhail Matusovskiy was a Soviet poet and songwriter. He began writing poetry as a child. He published his very first poem, 'Bike Run', at the age of twelve in the regional newspaper 'Lugansk Pravda'. After graduating from a construction college in Lugansk, he worked at a factory. At the same time, he began publishing his poems in local newspapers and magazines. In 1933-1934, he studied at the Donetsk Institute of Public Education in Lugansk, but soon dropped out and went to Moscow. In 1939, he graduated from the Moscow Institute of Philosophy, Literature, and History named after Nikolay Chernyshevskiy. During World War II, he served as a war correspondent. He gained wide fame as a composer of film music and a poet-songwriter.

- The main belt asteroid (2295) Matusovskiy, discovered on August 19, 1977 by the Soviet astronomer N. S. Chernykh at the Crimean Astrophysical Observatory, is named in honor of the poet.
