The recording of "The Wall" was very tense, mainly because [Roger Waters] was starting to go a bit mad. This was the record when he fell out badly with Rick [Richard Wright]. Rick has a natural style, a very specific piano style, but he doesn't come up with pieces easily or to order [which is] a problem when other people are worrying about who did what and who should get the credit. There was even talk of Roger and Dave [David Gilmour] elbowing me out and carrying on as a duo. There were points during "The Wall" when Roger and Dave were really carrying the thing. Rick was useless, and I wasn't very much help to anyone, either.

[on A Momentary Lapse of Reason] At that time, certainly, I just thought, I can't really see how we can make the next record or if we can it's a long time in the future, and it'll probably be more for, just because of feeling of some obligation that we ought to do it, rather than for any enthusiasm.

[on The Division Bell] The album feels much more home-made, very much as a band playing together in one space. I think that Rick in particular felt significantly more integrated in the process this time, compared to Momentary Lapse. It was nice to have him back.
