A respected pioneer of Italian film music, Enzo Masetti was born in Bologna in 1893. Although several references give his birthday as 18 August, his birth certificate states 19 August 1893, and he was the son of Giulio Masetti and Emma Roversi. Enzo graduated from Bologna Conservatory in 1920. After working on a number of symphonic and operatic works, he entered the Italian film industry in 1936 and became the first winner of the Nastri d'Argento for Best Score in 1946. At the same time he gained a reputation for film music teaching and held classes at both the S. Cecilia Conservatory and Centro Sperimentale di Cinematografia.

His most famous pupil was Mario Nascimbene. Masetti also wrote the definitive reference work "La Musica nel Film" in 1950. After composing the score for Hercules Unchained (1959) (Hercules Unchained), Masetti retired, sadly enjoying only two years of retirement before his death at the age of 67.
