From Vancouver, Canada. At 19, directed documentary for the National Film Board of Canada. Entered the experimental film arena in the early 80's. "Diminished" (1980) won honorable mention at the 9th Northwest Film and Video Festival. Gene Youngblood, author of the avant-garde manifesto, "Expanded Cinema", wrote about the film, describing it as "A delicately structured non-verbal poem about loss, time and memory, closer in style to Michael Snow or Hollis Frampton than to Alain Resnais. Faded images lap-dissolve against small sounds and enigmatic subtitles like voices from the past. A documentary of the heart. Made films, cut features and started writing/directing in 1988 with "Matinee". "...this tongue-in-cheek thriller makes up for its lack of shock value with a solid cast, liquid imagery and innovative editing." (Variety/sept6-12,1989). "Matinee" was followed by "North of Pittsburgh". Reviewed at the Montreal Film Festival, Variety noted "A beautifully acted and sharply written comedy-drama... Richard Martin directs with self-assurance and flawless pacing". (Variety/sept 11, 1992). For release in 1997, "Wounded", a dark thriller about loss, time and memory, which stars Graham Greene, Madchen Amick and Adrian Pasdar. Father is Dick Martin of "Rowan and Martin's Laugh-In".
