Biography

Hugh Martin was born on August 11, 1914 in Birmingham, Alabama, USA. He was a composer and writer, known for Meet Me in St. Louis (1944), Jurassic World (2015) and The Godfather (1972). He died on March 11, 2011 in Encinitas, California, USA.

Was nominated for Broadway's Tony Award four times: three times in 1963 with collaborator Timothy Gray for "High Spirits," as Best Author (Musical), Best Composer and Lyricist, and for lyrics and music as parts of a Best Musical nomination; and then, 26 years later, in 1990, with collaborator Ralph Blane as Best Score (Musical) for "Meet Me in St. Louis."

Inducted into the Songwriters Hall of Fame in 1983.

He mentioned in his autobiography, The Boy Next Door, that he was unhappy during his tenure at MGM because of the culture of one-upmanship.

American songwriter and lyricist, former Broadway singer. Played in mixed quartet known as 'The Four Martins'. Member of ASCAP from 1941. Best known songs include "The Trolley Song"; "The Boy Next Door", "Have Yourself A Merry Little Christmas"; "Love"; and "Gotta Dance".
