Biography

Phil Marshall is an American composer, lyricist, arranger, and conductor whose work spans feature films, television, and documentaries. A native of Southern California and the son of composer, arranger, and record producer Jack Marshall, he studied music composition at the University of California, Irvine and continued his classical training with Aaron Copland.

Marshall's film-scoring career began with the award-winning short film "End of the Rainbow," which went on to receive awards at several film festivals and led to subsequent work in feature films and television.

His credits include scores for documentaries directed by Bill Guttentag, including the Academy Award-winning "Twin Towers" (2004) and the Peabody Award-winning "Nanking" (2007), featuring the Kronos Quartet. His film and television credits include projects for directors Steven Spielberg, Noah Baumbach, Jean-Pierre Jeunet, Michael Mann, and Duwayne Dunham. Marshall also collaborated with composer Angelo Badalamenti on seven feature films including "Secretary," "Arlington Road," "The Beach," "A Very Long Engagement," and "44 Inch Chest."

On the television side, Marshall has scored more than twenty films for the Disney Channel, three films for the Family Channel, and "American Daughter" for Lifetime.

In addition to his screen work, Marshall arranged and conducted tracks on B.B. King's Grammy Award-winning album "Deuces Wild" and created orchestral arrangements for "The Alhambra: La Vega" for classical guitarist Christopher Parkening. He is the brother of filmmaker Frank Marshall.
