Despo Maroulakou is one of the leading film editors in the history of Greek cinema and among the first women to enter the male-dominated world of Greek film technicians. She began her career in the mid-1970s and quickly became known for her meticulous craft and dedication. Maroulakou collaborated with some of Greece's most acclaimed filmmakers, including Takis Spetsiotis, Stavros Tornes, Costas Ferris, Hristoforos Hristofis, Lefteris Xanthopoulos, Maria Gavala, Eleni Alexandraki, Kostas Aristopoulos, Nikos Kornilios, and Lila Kourkoulakou. Her editing work on Enastros tholos (1993) earned her the Best Editing Award at the Thessaloniki Film Festival in 1993, a recognition that reflected her precision and emotional insight as an editor. Maroulakou's long career has been marked by perseverance and professionalism, often working under demanding conditions and devoting countless hours to perfecting her craft. A pioneer who helped pave the way for women in key technical roles, she has spoken openly about the challenges of working in a male-dominated industry and the personal sacrifices required by her art. In 2021, she was honored with the Golden Alexander for her lifetime contribution to Greek cinema, acknowledging her groundbreaking role in shaping both the craft of editing and the broader acceptance of women behind the camera.
