- Contrary to past statements, it was Mary-Beth Manning who used the word "period" in a scene with Joanne Woodward in CBS's 1978 Emmy winning "See How She Runs, " for the first time on network TV. Manning changed the dialogue to something she felt was more realistic and CBS and the producers allowed it. Courtney Cox claims to be the first person to say " period" in 1985 for a national Tampax commercial , but this is incorrect.
