Joseph is Egyptian.
From Down and Out in Beverly Hills to his autobiographical one-man show, What Are The Odds?, Joseph Makkar has spent 43 years in the business honoring the power of storytelling.
Joseph received a scholarship to acting school at the age of ten and went on to perform in theatre and film. His early education was sponsored by three prolific aerospace and research firms-McDonnell Douglas, Howard Hughes, and TRW-from grade school through his freshman year of high school. A teacher recognized his artistic potential and encouraged him to audition for The Los Angeles County High School for the Arts (LACHSA).
After receiving coaching from his mentor, Chip Fields, Joseph auditioned for and was accepted into LACHSA’s rigorous theatre program. Following graduation, he expanded his professional path-combining discipline, leadership, and entrepreneurship with his lifelong love for animals.
For 35 years, Joseph has managed, consulted for, and staffed veterinary hospitals. He is the founder of Veterinary Staff Unlimited, based in Los Angeles-one of the largest veterinary-specific staffing and consulting firms in the country. Through his work, he has supported hospital owners, mentored professionals, and helped elevate operational and medical standards across the industry.
Joseph completed his undergraduate degree in management and earned his MBA from Pepperdine University’s Graziadio School of Business.
His dedication to the arts and his commitment to leaving the world better than he found it are matched only by his devotion to family. Joseph has been married for 31 years and is the proud father of three daughters.
Joseph’s family migrated from Egypt in 1973, arriving to Los Angeles when he was 8 months old. He is the last of 6 children.
