Born on 13 August 1971 in Düsseldorf, Germany, as the daughter of former German national ice hockey keeper Rainer Makatsch. After studying politics and sociology at the University of Düsseldorf for two years and an apprenticeship as dressmaker, she was hired by newborn TV music channel VIVA in 1993 and hosted popular shows such as Interaktiv (1996). Also presenting the charts show Bravo TV (1985), the media considered her the prototype of a "girlie girl". Her first appearance in a movie, Jailbirds (1996), surprised the critics and slowly changed her image. In the following years, she played leading characters in successful projects such as Am I Beautiful? (1998) and Gripsholm (2000). Living in London from 1999 to 2005, she also appeared in English language movies, most prominently Love Actually (2003). After another convincing performance on Margarete Steiff (2005), she is considered a respected actress anyway. In 2009 she played the main role in 'Hilde', the biographical movie about the famous German actress/singer Hildegard Knef. Her performance was a tour de force.

Currently lives in London, UK.
(1996-2004) Lived with British actor Daniel Craig. They met on the set of Obsession (1997).
In 2005 she began a relationship with Max Martin Schröder. On January 23, 2007 they welcomed their first daughter Mieke Ellen Schröder and their second daughter was born in October 2009. They broke up by 2014. In 2015 she welcomed her third daughter.

What fascinates me the most about Hildegard Knef is that people can't get her right, because she had so many ambivalent qualities. And that she was very, very brave.
I took singing lessons for a year before doing the recordings for Hilde (2009). Despite all of that, unfortunately I can't imitate her. When I hear a version of mine and think, Not so bad!, then I listen to her version and my heart sinks, because of course I don't come close to what she had in her voice. But through this process I understood her better as a human being.
Women sometimes make more intensive, difficult films that take you on an uneasy journey.
I find that so many women today still subject themselves to an external dictation. Dressing up as a product and keep pleasing others, this belief is still on the consciousness of women. I do not know if it's men who dictate this or if women keep themselves trapped into this role.
When like I a project, a film or a director, then you offer me whatever you want. I will play it so that I can find love for the role.
