Streaming Stars, Then and Now

He was educated and brought up at the Sir Joseph Mason Orphanage in Birmingham. His first opportunity to tread a stage came during the war. While serving with the Royal Corps of Signals, he toured with Stars in Battledress. On demob, he became a tyre salesman, but, after a year, he joined a travelling company called Arena, playing at almost every theatre outside London. He spent about nine years as actor and director at Nottingham Playhouse. He did some television, including the Charlton Heston film version of Julius Caesar before becoming the licensee Amos Brearly in the television series Emmerdale Farm (now just called Emmerdale}.

Off-screen, he was said to be a real gentleman who always had time for his fans, even if they interrupted a dinner out.

Spoke the first words on the stage of Nottingham&#39;s Playhouse Theatre.

Best known for his long-running role as grumbling landlord Amos Brearly on the soap &quot;Emmerdale&quot; (1972-1991).

Served with the Royal Corps of Signals during WWII and started with repertory stage acting after the war.

He was born in Hull, but raised in Birmingham.

He started out on the stage, and was artistic director of the Nottingham Playhouse in the 1960s.

He&#39;s the honorary president of the Licensed Victuallers Association.
