- He was educated and brought up at the Sir Joseph Mason Orphanage in Birmingham. His first opportunity to tread a stage came during the war. While serving with the Royal Corps of Signals, he toured with Stars in Battledress. On demob, he became a tyre salesman, but, after a year, he joined a travelling company called Arena, playing at almost every theatre outside London. He spent about nine years as actor and director at Nottingham Playhouse. He did some television, including the Charlton Heston film version of Julius Caesar before becoming the licensee Amos Brearly in the television series Emmerdale Farm (now just called Emmerdale}.
