She has a brother: Luís Filipe Silveira Mader, (b. 1954), a doctor. He's married to Maria Elisa de Sá. Together they have three girls: Renata (b. 1983), Mariana (b. 1985) and Patrícia (b. 1982).

In August 2005, after suffering a convulsion in Florianópolis, Malu was diagnosed with a benign brain cyst. She was submitted to a successful surgery.
