Biography

John Macurdy was born on March 18, 1929 in Detroit, Michigan, USA. He was an actor, known for Don Giovanni (1979), The Metropolitan Opera Presents (1977) and Otello (1986). He was married to Justine Votypka. He died on May 7, 2020 in Stamford, Connecticut, USA.

He was a sergeant and radar instructor in the U.S. Air Force. He was at Keesler Air Force Base in Mississippi when he did some coaching in New Orleans and was noticed by the general director of the New Orleans Opera. He made his professional debut with that company.

He made his New York City Opera debut in "Street Scene" and appeared in such works as "The Devil and Daniel Webster," "The Ballad of Baby Doe," "La Bohème," "Turandot," "Aida," and the Reverend John Hale in "The Crucible".

He performed at the Opéra de Paris, Teatro alla Scala, Teatro Colón, and the Salzburg Festival.

In 1962 he made his Metropolitan Opera debut as Tom in "Un ballo in maschera", and appeared on the Met stage until 1997. He sang more than 1,000 performances with the Met in such works as "Turandot," "Faust," "Aida," "La Sonnambula," "Il Trovatore" "Eugene Onegin" "Manon", and "Rigoletto".
