Biography

Michael Maclear was born on December 18, 1929 in London, England, UK. He was a producer and writer, known for The Greenpeace Years (1991), In the Company of Strangers (2001) and Beautiful Dreamers (1990). He was married to Yoko Koide. He died on December 25, 2018 in Toronto, Ontario, Canada.

His career began at age 14, when he was a copy boy on Fleet Street. That eventually led to a job as a cub reporter at the London bureau of the Chicago Tribune. He relocated to Canada , and was hired by the CBC to do rewrites. He was editor of Newsmagazine, CBC's first live news-documentary program. He became a Far East correspondent in 1961 and then a London correspondent. He was the first TV journalist from the West to report from North Vietnam; his reports were used on many U.S. networks, and his columns were syndicated by The New York Times.

Colleague of Morley Safer on CBC Newsmagazine, he was the recipient of the 2013 Canadian Journalism Foundation Lifetime Achievement Award.
