- MacLean was a professor of English literature and a published writer with decades of experience. But he is primarily remembered for his autobiographical novella "A River Runs Through It" (1976), which recorded his memories about his long-dead brother Paul.
- Maclean's younger brother, Paul Davidson MacLean, was an investigative journalist with a reputation for exposing political corruption. In 1938, Paul was brutally beaten and mortally injured by two unidentified attackers in Chicago. The local police investigated his murder, but the case was never solved. Norman spent decades speculating about the causes for his brother's death.
- Maclean worked on a biography of the military officer George Armstrong Custer from from 1959 to 1963, but eventually abandoned this project. His unfinished book about Custer was published posthumously in 2008.
