- Mary MacLane was born on May 2, 1881 in Winnipeg, Manitoba, Canada. She was a writer and actress, known for Men Who Have Made Love to Me (1918), Haus Kummerveldt (2023) and Between My Flesh and the World Fingers (2018). She died on August 6, 1929 in Chicago, Illinois, USA.
- MacLane's name, face and only known film, are known to film buffs largely through the documentary Hollywood (1980) and subsequent companion book by Kevin Brownlow. Brownlow subsequently went into more detail on MacLane's life and career in his 1990 book Behind the Mask of Innocence.
- Her breakout memoir, The Story of Mary MacLane, was published when she was only 19 years old.
- Her memoir, The Story of Mary MacLane, was republished in 2013 by Melville House as part of their Neversink Library. The Neversink edition restores MacLane's original title for the work, I Await the Devil's Coming, and features an introduction by Jessa Crispin.
- Inspired to write and publish her confessional memoir largely after reading the work of Marie Bashkirtseff. H.L. Menkin derisively referred to MacLane as "The Butte Bashkirtseff" in his commentary.
- Died in obscurity in 1928. Her work remained out of print until 1993.
