Biography

David Mackay

Mini bio

  • David Mackay was born in Minneapolis, Minnesota and grew up waterskiing, selling rainbow ice cream at the state fair and collecting 35mm cameras. He attended Stanford University and graduated with a BA in Economics. He headed further south to get his Masters in film production at USC, and maintained an admirable GPA. Unfortunately grades don't matter in film school, but his half hour thesis film PROVIDENCE, got some attention by premiering at the Sundance Film festival. It didn't hurt that Keanu Reeves and one of his amazing Indian motorcycles also appear in the film. PROVIDENCE was awarded Best Picture at the Television Academy's student awards. Mackay then worked as a camera operator and Director of Photography before directing his first full-length movie, BREAKING FREE, a family film that sold to Disney in 1995. Gathering together his roommates and friends from film school, Mackay next produced and directed THE LESSER EVIL, a twisty-turny suspense thriller starring Arliss Howard, Tony Goldwyn, David Paymer, Colm Fiore, and Adam Scott. The film was enthusiastically received at dozens of film festivals and sold domestically to MGM. From there Mackay has had the good fortune to direct and produce many movies in many different genres. A personal favorite being the warm, fuzzy TEN INCH HERO. More rom-coms, Hallmark movies, mysteries and thrillers with very well-respected cast members add to his resume. Currently Mackay has several (okay, like 20) projects in various stages of development. We'll see what's next...
