- Karl Machus was born on December 17, 1884 in Berlin, Germany. He was an art director and production designer, known for 1812, Gräfin Vandières (1926), Ich heirate meine Frau (1934) and Othello (1922). He died on May 24, 1944 in Berlin, Germany.
- The production designer Karl Machus first finished an education as a painter before he dedicated to the theater where he created the coulisses for numerous plays. Finally he entered the film business and at the beginning of his career he was supported by the production designer Kurt Richter.
- During World War II he created the decoration for some huge productions, often together with Erich Zander. To these works belong "Bismarck" (1940), "Der grosse König" (1942), "Die goldene Stadt" (42), "Opfergang" (1944) and "Kolberg" (19645).
- His first movies as a production designer came into being together with Kurt Richter, afterwards he became an independent production designer as well.
- Karl Machus was not able to see the finished result of his last cinematical work. The movie "Kolberg" was only released after his death.
- Along with Erich Zander he designed the sets for most of the films made by director Veit Harlan during the Nazi era.
