(1971-73) President of the Writers Guild of America, West (WGAw).

He worked for Warner Brothers from 1944-50, notably on the Joan Crawford classic Mildred Pierce (1945), for which he won an Oscar nomination. From the mid-'50s he was primarily active in television, often writing under the pseudonym Quentin Werty. Between 1955-70 he also directed several low-budget films.

First worked as an usher at Radio City Music Hall and later became a staff writer for NBC radio.
