Biography

Galt MacDermot was born on December 18, 1928 in Montréal, Québec, Canada. He was a composer, known for Hair (1979), Zodiac (2007) and Forrest Gump (1994). He was married to Marlene Bruynzeel. He died on December 17, 2018 in Staten Island, New York City, New York, USA.

Was twice nominated for Broadway's Tony Award: in 1969, for music of Best Musical nominee "Hair," and in 1972 as Composer of Best Score, with lyricist John Guare, for "Two Gentlemen of Verona."

Member of the producing group with Donald MacSween, Timothy Porteous and with James de B. Domville as music composer and production manager of the 1957 McGill university revue 'My Fur Lady' directed by Brian Macdonald. It played for 402 times including at the Stratford festival.

His father was a history professor and diplomat who played piano and served as ambassador to South Africa, Greece, Israel, and Australia.

He received a bachelor's degree from Bishop's University in Quebec, majoring in English and history. He moved to South Africa to join his father, and earned a second degree, studying organ and composition at the University of Cape Town.
