MacLaren is an actor who revels in the opportunity to work on material that pushes the limits. Whether it be the Psychologist Father of Sam Huntington's character Josh in Being Human (2011), the alcoholic husband Jim Gammon of Kathy Baker's character in the Jesse Stone MOW's Jesse Stone: Benefit of the Doubt (2012) , or the self proclaimed murderer William Styler in the true life story of Nancy Pfister's Murder in Aspen (2016) his work is confident and exciting. He is more often seen in more traditional character roles like Judge Roland Tate in Capote (2005) or Reverend Buck friend to the Borden family in the Lizzie Borden Took an Ax (2014) biopic.
