- He started out playing guitar. He was working at a radio station in Pennsylvania when Bill Haley hired him to replace the bass-fiddle player in his band, the Saddlemen. Lytle didn't know how to play bass, and Haley gave him a 30-minute lesson, teaching him the slap-bass technique (in which the strings are smacked against the fingerboard).
