Biography

  • Ann Lu is a Chinese American filmmaker. Born and raised in Chengdu, China, Lu came to the United States to attend college in Tennessee. After earning a bachelor's degree in mass communications, Lu moved to Los Angeles to pursue directing.

Lu's critically acclaimed feature debut Dreamers is a coming of age drama about two childhood friends leaving small-town America to chase their dreams in the big city. The film was an official selection of eight international film festivals and won awards in multiple categories including Director, Screenwriter, Cinematographer, Best Picture and Audience Choice Awards. After a successful exclusive theatrical release, Dreamers was released on DVD and made available to the sell-through and rental markets at big box and specialized retail including Best Buy, Hollywood Video and Amazon. The title remains available for physical rental via Netflix.

Following Dreamers, Lu penned and directed her second feature Erosion, a provocative contemplation on love and death. The Los Angeles Times called Lu's sophomore work "sensual and bold" and Variety dubbed the film "an erotic walk on the wild side". Erosion was an official selection of four international film festivals and the recipient of several awards. The film was released on DVD and made available to the sell-through and rental markets at specialized retail and Amazon and via Netflix where it remains available to subscribers.

Lu's latest film 20:16 is a Chinese language film inspired by real events surrounding the big escape to Hong Kong from mainland China during the Cultural Revolution. 20:16 was released in China and Hong Kong by China Film Group in May 2017.
