Biography

Mark Lothar was born on May 23, 1902 in Berlin, Germany. He was a composer and actor, known for Tragödie einer Leidenschaft (1949), The False Step (1939) and Königliche Hoheit (1953). He died on April 7, 1985 in Munich, Bavaria, West Germany.

He already had his first huge success in 1928 with his opera "Tyll". It followed other operas like "Münchhausen" (1933), "Schneider Wibbel" (1938) and his last important work "Momo und die Zeitdiebe" (1978).

Beside his activity for the stage Mark Lothar also was engaged for composing film music. Already in 1921 he was mentioned in a movie for the first time called "Teufel und Circe".

After a study in Berlin and Munich he was appointed to the German Theater by Max Reinhardt, one year later he switched to the Prussian Sttatstheater Berlin by Gustaf Gründgens where he became an influential musical conductor.

In May 1938 his opera Tailor Wibbel, inspired by a play by Hans Müller-Schlösser, was performed at the Berlin State Opera.

In the 50s followed the height of his career as a filmcomposer.
