Biography

João Lobo Antunes was born on June 4, 1944 in Lisbon, Portugal. He was married to Maria do Céu Lourinho Soares Machado, Maria do Espírito Santo Silva Salgado and Ana Maria Plantier Couvreur de Oliveira. He died on October 27, 2016 in Lisbon, Portugal.

Brother of writer and psychiatrist António Lobo Antunes, jurist and cultural manager Miguel Lobo Antunes, Pedro Lobo Antunes (b. 1947, d. Lisbon, 21 December 2013), neuropediatrician doctor and writer Nuno Lobo Antunes (b. São Sebastião da Pedreira, Lisbon, 10 May 1954) and jurist and diplomat Manuel Lobo Antunes (b. Lisbon, 27 June 1958), Commander and Grand-Cross of the Order of Prince Henry and Commander of the Order of Merit, and uncle of writer José Maria Vieira Mendes Lobo Antunes (b. Lisbon, 8 April 1976) and João Maria Vieira Mendes Lobo Antunes (b. 19 January 1981).

Has three daughters from his first marriage, Margarida (b. 1971), Maria João (b. 1974) and actress Paula Lobo Antunes (b. 20 Jan 1976), and one daughter from his second marriage, Madalena Sofia Salgado Lobo Antunes (b. 30 Oct 1984).

Son of João Alfredo de Figueiredo Lobo Antunes (b. Tânger, 28 February 1915, d. Lisbon, 10 June 2004), great-grandson of the 1st Viscount of Nazaré, medical doctor, and wife Maria Margarida Machado de Almeida Lima (b. 1915).

Grand-Cross of the Ancient, Most Noble and Enlightened Military Order of Saint James of the Sword, of the Scientific, Literary and Artistic Merit, Grand-Cross of the Order of Prince Henry and Grand-Cross of the Order of Liberty.
