In 1944 he was on the list of The Gottbegnadeten-Liste ("God-gifted list" or "Important Artist Exempt List") a 36-page list of artists considered crucial to National Socialist culture by the Reich Ministry for Public Enlightenment and Propaganda.

Ludwig Linkmann was a German actor. In 1927, he began working at the Giessen City Theater, where he remained until 1931.

From 1947 to 1953, he was a member of the Düsseldorf Schauspielhaus ensemble. His roles there included the bandit captain in The Bandits (1948), the baker in Pagnol's The Baker's Wife (1951), the fool in As You Like It (1951), the fisherman in Undine (1952), and Habakkuk in The Alpine King and the Misanthrope (1952).

In 1953 he moved to the Deutsches Schauspielhaus in Hamburg, where he played the role of village judge Adam in The Broken Jug, the title character in Molière's George Dandin, Babberley in Charley's Aunt, Isolani in Wallenstein's Death and Orgon in Tartuffe.

Since 1939 he has also appeared as a supporting actor in various films.
