Biography

Josh Levy

Biography

  • Josh Levy is an award-winning director, writer and producer who splits his time between Toronto and Los Angeles. He is best known for comedy films such as The Immigrant and Hayseed and the television series Backpackers and Locker Room. Equal parts visionary and pragmatic, Levy excels at creating stylish, entertaining productions on a low budget. With sharp wit and boundless enthusiasm, Levy attracts first-rate talent to his funny, emotional tales of outsiders and outlaws.

His feature debut Hayseed, a picaresque satire about a small town boy searching for his lost dog in the big city, was an official selection of the Toronto International Film Festival and the Vancouver International Film Festival. The film was screened around the world and enjoyed a two-month run at the Institute of Contemporary Art in London England. Levy followed Hayseed with an innovative TV movie called DoUlike2watch.com (produced with Telefilm Canada for The Movie Network), and co-created the cult comedy series Locker Room (available on iTunes), garnering attention from Sports Illustrated, Entertainment Weekly and The Village Voice. He also co-created the provocative talk show Jawbreaker with Brad Fraser.

Levy's The Immigrant stars Kids In The Hall's Scott Thompson and Dave Foley, with Michael Cera, Margaret Cho and Will Forte. The film won the Best Of Fest Grand Prize at L.A. Comedy Shorts Film Festival and enjoyed a special screening at San Diego Comic-con International.

Levy directed Backpackers, the first digital comedy series for The CW and CTV. Shot on location in Europe, Backpackers is about best friends Dillon Casey, Noah Reid and Giacomo Gianniotti as they adventure from Paris to Prague in search of a missing fiance. The web series was a hit and as a result The CW added Backpackers to its prime time television schedule and enlisted Levy to direct six additional half-hour episodes. The series premiered on The CW in the summer of 2014 and is now available streaming on CW Seed.

Levy has directed music videos for labels including Sony, Geffen and Universal, and received the CMA for Director of the Year. In 2007 Josh and his brother, producer Robi Levy, were awarded the FOX21 Reality Award at the Banff World Television Festival. The Levy Brothers have created hilarious digital shorts for Rogers Communications, the NFL, the NHL and HBO Canada. Josh Levy's acclaimed work in film, television, digital, music videos and commercials has been distributed worldwide and screened on television networks including The CW, MTV, The CBC, CTV, Global, City TV, Bravo, Showcase, HBO Canada, CW Seed, Here!, Logo, Discovery, The Movie Network, and hundreds of film festivals around the globe.

Josh and Robi recently completed production on the feature documentary Mouth Congress about the legendary 80's comedy-punk band and the early days of Kids In The Hall at Toronto's Rivoli club. Josh is developing the single-camera comedy series We The Jury for CCI Entertainment and preparing to direct the feature film Bouncy based on his screenplay in Los Angeles in the fall of 2016.
