Tony Lazarowich is a veteran Special Effects Supervisor and Coordinator with nearly four decades of experience in the film and television industry. Since beginning his career in 1986, he has collaborated with some of the industry’s most acclaimed directors, including Michael Bay, Chris Columbus, Barry Sonnenfeld, Rupert Wyatt, Jon Favreau, and Aaron Sorkin. His credits include Final Destination: Bloodlines (2025), The Social Reckoning (2026), Rise of the Planet of the Apes (2011), A Series of Unfortunate Events (2017), Percy Jackson & the Olympians: The Lightning Thief (2010), and Elf (2003).
Tony is renowned for bringing directors’ visions to life through both spectacular large-scale practical effects and highly specialized custom engineering. His work includes some of the film industry’s most ambitious pyrotechnics, fire effects, explosions, and controlled burn sequences, executed with precision and an uncompromising commitment to on-set safety. On Final Destination Bloodlines, he oversaw complex large-scale effects requiring innovative rigging and flawless execution, while on Percy Jackson and the Olympians and A Series of Unfortunate Events, he designed and fabricated specialty rigs, mechanical effects, and custom-built creations that helped bring imaginative worlds to life.
His versatility extends beyond action and fantasy effects to comedy-driven practical gags. In Elf, directed by Jon Favreau, Tony built and operated several of the film’s most memorable effects, including Santa’s sleigh, the iconic elevator button gag, and the beloved Jack-in-the-Box scene featuring Will Ferrell. Whether creating massive fire sequences, engineering intricate specialty rigs, or designing whimsical practical effects, Tony combines technical innovation, craftsmanship, and decades of hands-on experience to deliver practical special effects of the highest caliber.
In 1991, Tony founded PacificWest Special Effects Ltd. in Burnaby, British Columbia. Since 1998, he has co-owned and operated the company with his wife and business partner, Gina Hole Lazarowich, helping grow PacificWest into one of Canada’s most respected practical special effects companies, providing rentals, expendables, custom fabrication, and expert support to major film, television, commercial, and live event productions throughout North America.
