Biography

  • Handsome, tall, dark haired Herbert Langley born in England in 1888. Became a highly well-known opera singer, member of the British National Opera Company appearing in such operas as 'Barbiere di Siviglia', 'Marriage of Figaro' and 'Boheme' est. Starred in English silent movies making his debut playing the role as Robert Martin in Graham Cutts's 'The Wonderful Story' opposite Lilian Hall-Davis for the Graham-Wilcox Productions in 1922. Perhaps his most memorable film role as Abou Hassan in Herbert Wilcox's 'Chu-Chin-Chow' co-starring Betty Blythe in 1923. In 1927 he starred in a series of short silent opera films which were condensed stories of operas to synchronise with cinema orchestras and vocalists. Appeared in few talkies either character roles in well-known dramas or starring roles in short musicals including his last 'Pal O'Mine' in 1936. Herbert died in London in 1967 age 79. Father of cinematographer Bryan Langley.
