- Bill was known by his friends as "Billy", when he was a youth. He attended public school, as many actors' sons and daughters did in the 1960s. He was never athletic since he was stricken with a childhood disease. He was well liked at Emerson Junior High School in West Los Angeles, California. He graduated from Emerson in June 1962. He was known as a friend to everyone, rich or not. After Emerson, he went on to University High School in Los Angeles.

- Wrote a draft of the screenplay for Firestarter (1984) when John Carpenter was going to direct the film. Both were replaced when The Thing (1982), a film on which they both collaborated, did poorly at the box office.
- Contracted polio, but despite having to wear braces on his legs, he played baseball at WLA field (now called the Bad News Bears Field) at Ohio Ave and Sepulveda Blvd Los Angeles Ca, in 1961. He played First Base because of his limited mobility.
